Several flyovers in front of the Colombo Fort Railway Station are in danger of collapsing due to decay.
A senior police officer in the Colombo Central Division stated that due to this a major accident could occur in the near future and that the Colombo Municipal Council has been informed about this situation on several occasions but no action has been taken to repair or maintain it so far.
Thousands of people will be able to cross the bridge as the train service will resume from yesterday (25th). Currently, cement stones have been used in dangerous places. Police say a large number of people walking on the bridge at once could cause it to collapse.
Police are preparing to deploy a roadmap to control traffic if the bridge is closed and repaired in the face of the prevailing dangerous situation.
When inquired by Colombo Municipal Commissioner Roshini Dissanayake, Aruna said that the engineers of the Municipal Council were not aware of such a dangerous situation. The flyover was repaired in 2015 under the World Bank project and handed over to the Colombo Municipal Council. She says she will quickly look into the current situation there.
