Advice from the President

The President has instructed to set a price of Rs. 70 per kilo of paddy in the coming season, said the Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage.

The Minister said,

“Three companies in our country import 3 billion fertilizers a year. Then this conflict is going for a sum of 100 billion rupees for three people. All this is organized by chemical fertilizer companies. At present the Sri Lanka Freedom Party has also joined it. There is more leadership from the JVP. The government will increase the price of paddy to Rs. 100 per kilo next season. Because of organic farming. The President has decided. ”

However, the Center for Agrarian Struggles says it will withdraw from cultivation until a circular is issued regarding compensation for crop damage caused by the use of organic fertilizer.

Farmers in the Kaudulla Farmers' Colony in Medirigiriya have started producing organic fertilizer for the Maha season as instructed by the government.

However, the farmers point out that the fertilizer could not be used for farming as it has not yet decomposed.

Meanwhile, Nikawewa farmers in the Medirigiriya Divisional Secretariat Division in Polonnaruwa allege that the crops grown as by-products during the Yala season are being destroyed due to the lack of chemical fertilizers.

Farmers point out that due to the lack of pesticides, all these crops are susceptible to insect pests and fungal diseases.

Farmers say that in the current situation, they are unable to sell their produce.

Meanwhile, a discussion on fertilizer issues in the Anuradhapura District was held last night (16) under the patronage of Agriculture Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage.

The discussion was held at the residence of Minister SM Chandrasena.
