Accordingly, it has been reported that it is found in places such as the Kelani River, Bolgoda and Diyawannawa, says Senior Scientist of the Aquaculture Division Ajith Kumara.

He believes piranhas may have been among the fish brought into the ornamental fish industry some time ago.

He points out that fish have been brought to Sri Lanka for commercial, ornamental fish industry or any other means and that fish are released into the natural environment even when there is a natural flood.

Ajith Kumara, Senior Scientist of the Aquaculture Division further states that another invasive fish 'Mannaya' is present in the Bolgoda Lake and that the breeding of such invasive fish could pose a threat in the future.
