Dr. Chandima Jeewandara, Director of the Institute of Allergy, Immunology and Cell Biology, University of Sri Jayewardenepura states that the endemic Kovid 19 variety, which was recently reported from Sri Lanka, has now been completely eradicated.
He was speaking at a media briefing yesterday (10).
Although the Sri Lankan variety appears to be extinct, the British Covid variety or Alpha variety is more commonly reported in this country.
According to research data from the past month, the British variety has spread to remote areas outside Colombo.
He says the British variety has also been reported from Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Kuliyapitiya, Wariyapola, Habaraduwa, Matara, Karapitiya, Kandy and Ragama.
Dr. Jeewandara stressed that this strain spreads about 19% faster than the average Kovid 50 virus and is about 55% more severe and deadly.
However, all three vaccines currently in use in the country (AstraZeneca, Sputnik and Cyanoform) respond very well to this British variant or Alpha variant, he said.
Therefore, it is very important for people to get both the required doses, he said.
He also said that the Indian variety was found through the biological samples of one person, adding that the person was being quarantined.
Therefore, he stated that there has been no spread of the Indian variety in the country.
