Minister of State for Agriculture Shashindra Rajapaksa said that steps will be taken to import chemical pesticides for paddy cultivation only for the Maha season this year.
The decision was taken after discussions with the Fertilizer Advisory Committee, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Plantations.
Accordingly, he said, he had recommended to several private companies to import some quantities of low-dose herbicides, insecticides and pesticides.
The Cabinet approval for this will be obtained soon, the Minister said.
When inquired about this from the Director General of Agriculture Dr. Ajantha de Silva stated that only a small quantity will be imported based on the need.
He also said that he hopes to import these chemical pesticides to be used to control any major damage to the country's organic farming.
